The
Foot Pod is built on Dynastream technology, which
solves the challenge of accurately measuring a
user's speed and distance in real time. The system
was designed to measure each stride via a patented
accelerometer, which measures all parameters of each
foot stride, computes that data, then wirelessly
transmits speed and distance information to the
Forerunner 305 wrist unit via a 2.4 GHz signal. To
date, Dynastream technology is the first and only
commercially viable, accurate stride analysis
technology that can be used outside the laboratory
environment.
Once
the Foot Pod is turned on, the Forerunner 305
recognizes its wireless signal and asks if you wish
to train using the Foot Pod instead of with the
Forerunner's built-in GPS. Once confirmed, the
Forerunner 305 deactivates the GPS and the Foot Pod
begins measuring the workout. The Foot Pod
communicates to the wrist unit using Dynastream's
ANT Sport wireless technology, a commonly available
platform for connectivity and interoperability
between sports accessories and equipment. The unit
features a simple and secure lace-mounted
attachment, and runs on a single AAA battery that
offers 70 hours of typical use. The Foot Pod is 97
percent accurate out of the box and 99 accurate
percent when calibrated. It can also be worn in
tandem with the Forerunner 305's wireless heart rate
monitor. |

A good companion for Garmin's Edge 305 and
305CAD cycle computers and the Garmin Forerunner 305
personal trainer, the GSC 10 monitors your cycling
rhythm for up-to-the-minute results and later
analysis. The self-calibrating, wireless unit
measures both speed (in pedaling strokes per minute)
and cadence , then provides feedback to the user for
optimal performance. You can later feed the results
to Garmin's Training Center software, which helps
you tailor your workouts to meet specific goals and
objectives.
Like the Garmin heart rate monitor, the GSC 10
attaches easily to your bike, where its sensors
detect signals from your wheels and send the
information wirelessly to your personal
trainer/cycle computer. It's also backed by a
one-year warranty.
Monitor your pedaling cadence as you ride with this
self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor. It
measures and reports your pedaling strokes per
minute, providing feedback for optimal performance.

The X6 marks the first in a new
line of watches for Suunto, maker of the "wrist-top
computer." Like previous iterations of these large
watches, the multi-functionality of the X6 appeals
to a variety of outdoorsy folk. And Suunto goes a
further high-tech step, including the ability to
interface the watch with your PC to keep a digital
log of your activities, as well as share stats
online via Suunto's Web site.
Suunto gears the X6 toward enthusiasts who spend a
lot of their time on hills or mountains, such as
mountaineers, hikers, and cross-country skiers. The
watch includes a compass--quite handy to have right
on your wrist--as well as a barometer.
With the barometer, the X6 can roughly gauge
altitude and is able to keep track of the rates of
ascent and descent as well as the degree of slope
you're currently hiking or skiing. While we had to
reset the watch when we first arrived at our
trailhead (the air pressure was different from at
home where we'd first calibrated the watch), it then
kept fairly accurate measure of our changes in
altitude.
The X6 also includes a thermometer, but since it's
attached to your wrist, your body heat can affect
the reading. Suunto recommends removing it for 15
minutes to get a more accurate reading, but this can
be awkward during a hike. Since the watch is water
resistant to 100 meters, it can also be used to
ascertain water temperature before diving into a
mountain lake.
Various alarms can be used during hikes or training.
An interval alarm can be set to remind you to drink
fluids during your workout, for example, while the
programmable ascent alarm helps you keep to a safe
climbing speed. There's even a storm alarm that will
warn you of a sharp decrease in barometric pressure.
The internal barometer has a two-day memory and a
graph that shows changes in the weather pattern.
An advanced stopwatch keeps track of lap times and
split times, letting you see how long it's taken you
to reach a certain point without having to reset the
stopwatch each time. The X6's bright backlight makes
it easily viewable at night as well.
With the PC serial interface and included software,
you can upload log files that include time and date,
highest altitude, rate of ascent/descent, etc. These
can be personalized with your information and then
sent to Suunto at suuntosports.com to compare with
other X6 users.
For serious athletic outdoor enthusiasts, the Suunto
X6 can be a compelling tool to have attached to your
wrist when you're attached to the side of a
mountain. |

This compact and lightweight sport watch by
Navman straps comfortably onto your arm and, using a
technology called "global positioning," accurately
measures all kinds of pertinent information during

calories burned, and lap history (distance and
time). Optimized for runners, skaters, cyclists, and
downhill skiers, the watch also monitors current and
cumulative altitude. The X300 can record up to 50
lap times and stores them so you can measure the
improvement and progress you've made toward your
personal goals. It also functions as a regular
watch, showing time and date. And set-up couldn't be
simpler--just walk outside, turn it on and go.
Included with the watch are an arm strap, battery,

nautical miles or knots. The unit also displays
heading data that is accurate to 2 degrees, as well
as lap times for regattas. A 50-lap history lets you
look up your best times on the course. In addition

GPS-based atomic clock!), an automatic timer keeps
track of your time on the water.
